广东警官学院是2004年经教育部批准设立的省属公安本科院校，学院主管部门是广东省公安厅，教育教学业务主管部门是广东省教育厅。2008年，学院获得学士学位授予权。2012年，通过教育部本科教学工作合格评估。2018年，学院被评为广东省依法治校示范校。学院是广东省公安机关后备人才培养基地、省级公安民警培训基地、公安部警务实战训练基地和外警培训基地。在70年的办学实践中，学院始终坚持党的领导，坚持社会主义办学方向，全面贯彻党的教育方针，遵循高等教育基本规律，坚持政治建校、依法治校，服务政法公安工作和经济社会发展，充分发挥公安专门人才培养基地和公安智库的作用，构建了具有广东公安特色的教育培训体系，形成了政治建校、警务化管理、校局合作协同育人、实战化教学等鲜明的办学特色。
学院前身是广东省公安干部学校，创办于1949年11月。1958年3月，与省政法干校、省民警干训大队、广州市公安学校、广州市行政干部学校合并为广东省政法干部学校。1974年9月，开展普通中专学历教育。1983年3月，建立广东省政法干部学院，开展成人专科学历教育。1988年8月，更名为广东省公安司法管理干部学院。1992年12月，增设广东公安高等专科学校，开展普通专科学历教育。1998年5月，广东省人民警察学校并入广东公安高等专科学校。2004年5月，建立广东警官学院，开展普通本科学历教育。
学院建有嘉禾、滨江两个校区，占地面积共37.38万平方米。校舍建筑面积23.94万平方米，建有教学楼、实验楼、图书馆、学生宿舍、警体技能训练馆、战术训练楼等教学基本设施。教学、科研仪器设备总值13748.74万元。馆藏图书92.88万册，镜像电子专业图书48万册，文献资源建设特色鲜明，收集公安志和公安年鉴等特色公安文献376种630余册。
学院现有教职工506人，其中专任教师327人。具有硕士及以上学位专任教师239人，具有高级职称专任教师147人。有省部级教学团队7个，全国优秀教师、全国公安系统优秀教师、南粤优秀教师、省部级教学名师16人，全省公安机关十大金牌教官2人，广东省高校优秀青年教师培养对象3人，广东省“千百十工程”培养对象40人，兼任其他高校硕博士导师12人。
学院现开设侦查学、治安学、刑事科学技术、经济犯罪侦查、禁毒学、警务指挥与战术、交通管理工程、网络安全与执法、计算机科学与技术、法学、行政管理、社会工作等12个本科专业，其中公安专业8个，非公安专业4个;现有国家级特色专业1个（经济犯罪侦查），省级特色专业3个（经济犯罪侦查、侦查学、刑事科学技术），公安部重点专业建设点1个（侦查学），省级专业综合改革试点项目4个（治安学、禁毒学、法学、行政管理），省级重点学科3个（侦查学、治安学、刑事科学技术）;现有国家级精品课程1门，省部级精品课程3门，省级优质课程2门，省级精品资源共享课3门，省级精品视频公开课2门，校级精品课程、精品视频公开课35门,国家级规划教材１部;建有国家级大学生校外实践教育基地1个，省级大学生校外实践教育基地5个,省级实验教学示范中心8个。
学院大力加强科研平台建设,设有珠三角公共安全研究所、法学研究所、粤港澳警务发展与合作研究所、应急指挥与谈判研究所、警务心理研究所、物证科学研究所、信息侦查研究所、警察体育科学研究所等8个研究机构;建有广东省高校人文社科研究基地——广东省公共安全研究中心、广东省社会科学研究基地——国内安全与社会稳定研究中心、广东省政策咨询研究中心——公共安全研究中心、广州市人文社会科学重点研究基地——广州市公共安全重点研究基地等4个省级科研平台;建有广东天正司法鉴定中心、司法心理测试技术中心、物证鉴定中心;学报《政法学刊》获得全国高校优秀社科期刊、RCCSE中国核心学术期刊、第五届广东省优秀期刊等称号。
学院遵循高等教育基本规律和公安院校办学规律，主动适应广东政法公安工作和经济社会发展需要，秉承“忠诚、责任、服务”校训精神，培育“勤学、苦练、求实、创新”优良学风，努力培养忠诚可靠、纪律严明、业务精通，具有较强社会责任感、法治意识、创新精神，适应政法公安工作和经济社会发展的高素质应用型专门人才。现有全日制本科在校生6718人，建校70年来，学院为广东政法公安机关和其他行业培养输送了20余万名业务骨干和专门人才，为广东政法公安工作和经济社会发展作出了积极贡献，被誉为“南粤警官摇篮”。
学院是广东省公安机关民警培训的主阵地，设有公安部警务实战训练基地和广东省公安机关基层所队长学校。2004年至2018年共培训69224人次，年培训量约4615人次。培训任务包括：全国公安机关警务实战教官培训，全省市县公安局正职首任培训，地级以上市公安机关领导干部及厅机关、缉私、边检民警警衔晋升培训，专项工作培训，全国部分省市政法、公安机关委托的各类培训，港澳警务人员研习班，中欧警务培训项目培训班，外警培训班，外籍高级执法官员培训班等。2010年被评为“全国公安教育训练工作先进集体” 。学院是全省唯一的保安管理师职业技能专业培训机构，2015年起开设保安师职业技能培训班，截至2018年共完成1553人的培训工作。
